From the summit the panoramic view is outstanding. The wind, the silence, the immensity of sensations that renew our energy and full the heart of every person that has managed to reach the top. Their cry of joy is muffled in the infinite space, but is marked for ever in memory.

Managing to climb Villarrica's 9340 feet (2847 m) is more than an adventure—it is a life lesson. In a couple of hours the team develops bonds of trust, support, discipline and determination—all of this to reach the objective. To reach the crater of one of the most active volcanoes in Latin America.

For this reason, to climb the volcano you must go contact a tourism agency, unless it is a certified guide who is qualified on the subject and whose final authorization depends on the director of CONAF, the National Forest Corporation in Chile. The climbing season starts in mid October and continues through April, depending solely on the weather.

This is the most solicited activity for foreign tourists. It is not necessary to have experience or be an expert. More than technique, you need to be physically fit.

It takes 7 hours to climb to the top, but it is possible to save energy and at least two hours on the way up by taking an aerial tram that works all year. Tickets are $4,000 additional to the tour hired at the agency.

This excursion has an approximate cost of $40,000. It includes full equipment, insurance, entrance to the park, a guide and an assistant for groups of up to 6 people.

Physical demand is medium – high, but the group climbs at the pace of the slowest person. The main recommendation is to closely follow all the guider's instructions. If the guider instructs the group to return without reaching the summit due to the weather conditions, even if there are only 650 feet (200 m) to reach the summit, people must obey the instructions and return.
